This week, trainer Tonya Tittle from Energy Fitness personal training studio in Memphis, TN tells you about:

The importance of post-workout recovery

After finishing a tough workout, you probably feel like you’ve done everything you need to do for your body that day. In reality, tough workouts are great, but what you do in the next 60 minutes of recovery time is just as important if not more so!

If you aren’t refueling with the proper 2:1 ratio of protein to carbs after exercising, then you’re catabolizing your muscles- they’re basically eating themselves for fuel! The best way to do this is with a liquid, like a protein shake. Liquids are more bio-available than solids, meaning that your body absorbs them more quickly.

So next time you go to sit or lie down after exerting yourself, think again. Your workout isn’t really over until you follow the proper steps for post-recovery. Trust me – your body will thank you later!

Tonya Tittle of Energy Fitness in downtown Memphis asks today:

“What do you hate more- your fat or the cardio machine?”

We’ve all been there before- you know you need to get to the gym, but that little voice in the back of your head is whispering, “You can just do it tomorrow!” Sure, you can listen to that voice, but it’s not going to stop if you keep sitting around! Sometimes you may hate getting on that treadmill, but I bet you’d hate even more the weight you’d gain if you stayed home. Want some more tips to finally make that little voice shut up?

  • Bring a friend along. Studies show that working out with a partner or in a group setting releases even more endorphins than working out solo. Also, you’re 7 times more likely to be successful reaching your goals!
  • Remind yourself how far you’ve come. Post your “before” picture somewhere visible.
  • Remind yourself of the reasons you’re exercising in the first place. Write them out and post them up next to your “before” shot. Having your motivation in plain sight eliminates excuses!

Research Shows Weight Gain From High Fructose Corn Syrup

Far Greater Than Gain From Sucrose

You’ve all seen those commercials- the ones launched by the Corn Refiners Association featuring consumers claiming that there’s nothing wrong with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Well, new research from Princeton University proves those commercials wrong.

Unlike sucrose, which is metabolized by insulin from the pancreas, fructose seems to be processed in the liver into fat. This prevents fructose from being as readily available as an energy source.

Additionally, consuming fructose reduces one’s feeling of fullness after eating. It affects hormones like leptin that work with insulin to control satiety.

Ultimately, it’s best to avoid sugars when possible. However, if you’re going to indulge, opt for a naturally occurring sugar rather than something that’s highly processed and more fattening!

Want to learn more about the best foods for your body ? Energy Fitness trainers here in downtown Memphis offer customized meal plans to help you reach your nutrition goals!

Downtown Memphis personal trainer and Energy Fitness owner, Tonya Tittle, keeping you informed on how to maximize your workouts and minimize your recovery time:

Did you know that taking a ginger supplement reduces soreness from

the negative motion of weight training?

For example, when you’re doing a push up, the down motion (also called the eccentric phase) is where most of your soreness originates from.

Recent studies suggest that taking a daily supplementation of ginger reduces this soreness, which will allow you recover more quickly and ultimately work out harder!
