High Fructose Corn Syrup Versus Sucrose
Research Shows Weight Gain From High Fructose Corn Syrup
Far Greater Than Gain From Sucrose
You’ve all seen those commercials- the ones launched by the Corn Refiners Association featuring consumers claiming that there’s nothing wrong with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Well, new research from Princeton University proves those commercials wrong.
Unlike sucrose, which is metabolized by insulin from the pancreas, fructose seems to be processed in the liver into fat. This prevents fructose from being as readily available as an energy source.
Additionally, consuming fructose reduces one’s feeling of fullness after eating. It affects hormones like leptin that work with insulin to control satiety.
Ultimately, it’s best to avoid sugars when possible. However, if you’re going to indulge, opt for a naturally occurring sugar rather than something that’s highly processed and more fattening!
