Looking to clean out some cobwebs in your blood, liver and rest of your body to feel or sleep better and have more energy. Your body has a built-in system that makes your very existence possible by working 24/7 to rid your body of health-damaging impurities (toxins) through your liver, gut, skin, kidneys, and lungs.
This blog post is in response to a client’s request specifically to use chlorophyll & cilantro as heavy metal detox helpers.
Warning, the topic of detox can get in the weeds as the body is a complicated and wonderful work of art. Sorry if I have to go through twists and turns to get to the point. If you need just the details of the specific items listed in the blog post topic, skip to the bottom for “the big picture”.
Sadly some of us have damaged our genes and DNA by our lifestyle or environment choices and need a boost or helper to this process. Since the industrial revolution, 80,000 new scientifically created chemicals have been introduced into our environment. Each year, more than 4 billion pounds of potentially harmful chemicals are released into the environment, which can accumulate in the body and impact overall health. Detoxification support can help you stay healthy.
First and foremost your diet is the first place you should look! After looking at your diet; next, look to your environment. You know I can’t discuss detox without giving the science.
Symptoms and even chronic diseases related to heavy metal toxicity (also called heavy metal poisoning) is now considered to be a problem that millions of people deal with. Exposure to toxic heavy metals is believed to be a contributing factor, if not a root cause, of symptoms like low energy, loss of appetite, digestive issues, mood disturbances and cognitive changes. More specifically symptoms include poor recovery from exercise & weakness, brain fog, autoimmune disease such as Lyme’s disease, skin irritation, dementia, neurological disorders, higher risk for heart attacks, impaired motor control, speech, vision & gait, tremors, anemia, depression, bi-polar, anxiety, Heavy metals first enter your bloodstream from exposure to farmed fish, contaminated water, dental fillings and household products. These metals then travel throughout your body and penetrate the cells of various tissues and organs, where they can remain stored up for years! The primary goal of a heavy metal detox is to remove accumulated heavy metals from your brain and nervous system. The kidneys, liver, heart, lymphatic system and respiratory system will also benefit from detoxification, such as a liver cleanse.
What exactly are “heavy metals” and how do they enter your body?
Heavy metals are elements that can be toxic and very dangerous even in low concentrations. Toxins can enter your body via your environment (ingest, inhale, absorb via the skin) then they penetrate your cells of various tissues and organs where they can live for years.
Heavy metals that can lead to toxicity (or “poisoning”) include:
- Mercury • Lead •Arsenic • Cadmium • Aluminum • Nickel • Uranium • Thallium
- Fish to avoid: tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel and bigeye tuna
- Use or exposure to other household items, such as antiperspirants, baking powder, certain baby formulas, plastic toys, antacids, aluminum foil, certain metal pots and pans, stainless steel cutlery, coins, and some makeup. Passed down at birth from mother to child.
- Possibly receiving certain vaccinations (a hot topic these days)
- Other heavy metals to consider include manganese, iron, lithium, zinc and calcium (yes, under certain conditions very high levels of even essential minerals can become dangerous)
Unless you initiate the different phases of detoxification you may feel the effects of toxins and heavy metals chronically. When you do detox, toxins will re-enter the bloodstream making you feel sicker before you feel better. Stick with it for the long game.
Heavy metal testing in the form of hair analysis or a blood test is now widely available and is useful for confirming suspected toxicity. Check online as many companies offer home testing kits where you snip your hair and mail in.
PHASES OF DETOXIFICATION
Phase 1 causes oxidation and free radicals
Phase 1 is all about the oxidation of harmful toxins in order to break them down into less harmful metabolites. This is necessary, and it does result in free radicals which can do lots of harm (even to your DNA) if you don’t keep them moving through your detox pathways and OUT of your body!
Examples of Phase 1 Detox below. You may do these habits and not even know it.
Coffee in the am
Wine in the pm
Phase 2 is all about conjugation, which uses 6 different pathways to take water-soluble Phase 1 metabolites OUT of your body through your bile, urine, and stool. For the science types, these are glucuronidation, acetylation, esterification, amino acid conjugation, sulfation, and glutathione conjugation
Phase 2 absolutely requires:
- Sulfur! (from crucifer veggies, garlic, onions, meat, and egg yolks)
- Amino acids: glycine, cysteine (or n-acetyl cysteine), taurine, and methionine (meat)
- Molybdenum, a trace mineral (leafy vegetables, liver)
- Vitamin B12 (meat or alternative supplement)
- Glutathione, which is made from the above amino acids, or you can take it in a liposomal form.
Other nutrients and foods that help Phase 2 are flavonoids (found in fruits, vegetables, and many herbs), ellagic acid in red grape skin, garlic, rosemary, soy, and cabbage.
When Phase 2 doesn’t work the best then phase 1 toxins linger around are aren’t expelled by the body leading to toxic overload.
Urination & defecation must work properly so no digestive, hydration & kidney elimination issues need to be present. Check out the Healthy poop chart below and analyze your own diet and elimination. You want your poop to score a #4 or 5 on this Bristol chart:
Get elimination in order before doing a focused detox or “cleanse.” Otherwise, it is not worth the collateral damage. You don’t want to push Phases 1 and 2 if Phase 3 is not working!
A Few Other Methods of Detox besides your diet:
Chelation therapy…iv form
Bentonite Clay – topical acts like a sponge for toxins
Triphala..ayurvedic herbal formula
Homemade Anti-Itch Cream
And here is the buildup to the Cilantro & Chlorophyll listed for this topic. Drum roll please.
Cilantro (along with other green herbs and plants) is one of the best herbs for detoxifying and can help reduce the buildup of heavy metals like mercury and lead in the body. Try adding herbs like cilantro and parsley to fresh-squeezed green juices. Best sourcing to get highest does and optimal benefits is tincture form 2x/day.
Chlorophyll chelates heavy metals that have accumulated in our organisms. Modern-day lives are bombarded with polluted air, water, and food sources. Our bodies end up collecting contaminants such as lead, mercury, and aluminum, and these can eventually lead to heavy metal poisoning. Chlorophyll can bind with these heavy metals making their elimination from our bodies much more efficient.
The best sources of chlorophyll are green vegetables and algae. Leafy green vegetables such as spinach, kale, and chard. Darker green leafy veggies contain higher chlorophyll content. One cup of spinach contains around 24 mg of chlorophyll whereas a cup of the lighter colored cabbage will only provide 4 mg of it. Raw vegetables have higher chlorophyll content than cooked ones. Consuming parsley, watercress, green beans, arugula, leeks, endives, and peas will give you a boost of chlorophyll.
Another great detox supplement is spirulina and chorella. Drinking alcohol dehydrates you and robs your body of the nutrients it needs to function well. Chlorophyll reintroduces those vitamins and minerals back into your body.
Chlorella(1-4 grams per day, or about 4-8 caps daily) — Chlorella is a type of green algae that acts as a natural chelator to remove heavy metals, especially lead and mercury. It’s a great source of chlorophyll and is “hungry” to absorb other metals. You can take it in powder or tablet form.
