I have created so many videos over the years that may be useful to you now or for you to at least have the knowledge and tools to prevent injuries in the future. Check out this at home, at a park, traveling, or at your gym you can do with minimal equipment such as a dowel, broomstick, golf club or just cross your arms across your chest as seen in short video below. Want to increase the intensity? Try a medicine ball, band, dumbbell or cable. I talk fast so you may wish to adjust your volume up.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had clients or people tell me they injured their back by lifting and twisting something and then are in pain anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Think about your muscles and fascia covering large portions of your body as having the ability to get adhesions or “cobwebs”. You just want to have as much range of motion and mobility as you can to avoid pinching or twisting something the wrong way. To do that you have to move the body in different motions and at different speeds and WITH GOOD FORM! Also making sure you breathe.

Try the exercise below slow at first especially if you are not warmed-up properly. A proper warm-up looks differently for different people and ages of individuals. As we age we need more time to warm-up the body (like say 15 minutes into the workout or if you have passively warmed up from a hot bath). Then you may progress to the faster sport motion. You will notice your core working to accelerate and decelerate to the other side.

How many Reps & Sets should I do?

Go for time: 20 seconds for 3 sets or…

Reps, Sets & Frequency: 30 reps each side for 3 sets, Can be done several times per week.

Note that you need to hip hinge and unlock the knees.

Be sure to rest in between sets so you can let your muscles recover. You know all the ATP can be regenerated, catch your breath…etc.

Side story: I have my 11 year old on a weight training program now. He is shown how to do it then is responsible for making it happen without me breathing down his neck. I do have to remind him to do the workouts though as he forgets he needs to do twice a week. He tries to speed through the sets and do all of the same exercise in a row with minimal rest just to get it over with (in his own words). I keep trying to tell him that is not how it works and if he’s doing that then he needs heavier weights and needs to slow down to use muscle and not momentum. He recently said, the workouts are getting easier in which I replied, “No, You are getting stronger!”. After he mowed the lawn for the second time he decided his strength training workouts make mowing easier. Wohooo, he might be getting the point. ha, ha…just a few weeks before I change his workouts again (every 6 weeks).

In all that we do, it really is best if our body can do it optimally from a muscle and joint standpoint as well as cardio, flexibility and mental toughness angle!

For you sports enthusiasts this movement is especially great for paddling, tennis, golf, swimming and other rotational sports. Runners can even benefit from this.

The majority of us are creatures of habits. Everything from brushing your teeth, wearing your favorite jacket, taking your shoes off in the same place, a place for your keys, buying the same snacks, fruit and food, doing the same exercises over and over again, thinking negative thoughts about yourself or others.

This blog post is just a few thoughts that I have to help you and others. As I wrote this blog it just starting flowing out of me. I met my future neighbors in person last week. We have only spoken on face book. She said “You’re going to be my inspiration to me!” I must say I enjoyed this comment as with all my training and zest for helping others find their groove in health and fitness I do hear this often. A dear friend years ago told me “you’re fiercely inspirational!”.

When looking through these items below just know that there are 6 stages of behavior change. Think about where you are and how you can get where you want to be.

Stop and ponder when is the last time you shook things up a bit?

Are all of your habits serving you well?

Are you mindlessly eating or not considering that your portion size is gonna keep those pounds on and further from your goal?

What about clothes shopping. Look in your closet. Do you make it easy for yourself to get dressed without wearing out your willpower for the day? Do you have too many clothes and pretty much the same repeat purchases that you don’t wear? I recently just reduced my 11 year old son’s wardrobe to make it easier for him to pair shirts and pants or shorts. He has ADHD and I swear that too many choices were wearing on his mood. He hated putting away all the clothes when clean so they ended up shoved in a drawer and wrinkled. We couldn’t let him leave the house like a big wrinkled mess. It’s been two weeks now and we are pleased with his wardrobe choices daily and with less frustration.

Let’s turn the attention to exercise now since personal training is my main gig. Do you just mindlessly go through the motions at the gym or home program? Do you do the same exercises more than 6 weeks in a row? Do you even have a program? Chances are much higher when you have a trainer, fitness coach, fitness buddy or you write it down in a journal and track your workouts. I’m not trying to add one more thing to you if you don’t currently track your workouts. What I am saying is that sometimes you have to shake it up a bit and go outside of your comfort level to made real and lasting changes.

Here are some examples of changes that might help you with forward progress:

Ditch the solid food breakfast (save calories and time washing dishes) ——Make a shake and hold the fruit

Working from home and haven’t planned your meals for the day? —–Make the night before and put in containers so you will eliminate the grazing and skip poor food choices.

Go to bed when you feel like it——Set a new bedtime to get 7-8 hours of sleep and stick to it

Go to your closet and get rid of the “fat” clothes —-This eliminates the reason to not stick to a healthy diet and exercise program consistently.

Print out a blank calendar and mark days for exercise and be specific (run, walk, kayak, swim, hike, golf, tennis, boxing, jump rope, cycle, canoe, pilates, yoga, weights). When completed put time next to it and give yourself a smiley face, check mark or star. What ever motivates you to keep going. It’s a great visual. Aim for being active 6 days a week and don’t afraid of doing more than one type of exercise per day. Just be sure and give yourself one full day of rest. Mediate and show yourself gratitude for your body and mind being able to complete your daily and weekly workouts.

Have you have found that when you are  stressed or bored that you tend to take part in habits that you really want to change. This is the first step in being mindful also known as awareness. Being aware of what triggers you can help you to plan distractions ahead of time to change them and make them stick. Did you know that research has shown that it takes smokers an average of 7 times of quitting smoking to make it stick? Often times when smokers quit they turn to food since it’s an oral fixation, hand to mouth habit.

Get to know that thinking mind of yours and give it a good talking to or better yet ignore it and create a new story that is positive and yields positive habits.

If you tend to binge eat on chips, don’t buy them.

Need to cut back on caffeine? —- Try green tea or try Dandy Blend tea

Do you online shop when you need a quick shop of dopamine?

Whatever it is that you do to distract yourself, just know that YOU and YOU alone have the power to make the change. Your trainer or accountability coach can’t follow you around all day every day. It’s all those little successes that add up to big and happy success. Celebrate all your little victories and take steps to always improve yourself and lift up others around you.

Join and online support group where you can share your successes and get ideas from others. It can be a form of giving back and giving back makes you feel good.

I’ve been coaching individuals in the field of fitness for over 30 years. The more I learn and practice, the more I can pass on that knowledge to you and others so you can reach optimal health. If you are not already moving your spine in a lateral motion to work your core, you may wish to try this movement. Word of caution if you have a herniated disc be careful or check with your doctor, physical therapist or massage therapist. To work those muscles underneath what some call “side belly / spare tire” called external and internal obliques as well as your QL (aka: quadratus lumborum) then you need to bend your spine sideways or lateral flex your spine.

Grab a broom stick, golf club or mop type handle of sort and try the exercise below for 1-3 sets of 10-15 reps. If you are not frequently moving your body like this, then I would only suggest doing one set as the soreness in your intercostal muscles and the muscles that attach to your hip bone are getting crazy stretched also as well as your inner thigh and soreness the next day may be too much.

Be sure to exhale when you come back up. Listen to the instructions and watch the demo video below so as not to hurt yourself as it’s a very specific move.

To be complete Feb. 2021. As I sit and quickly take a break to write this post I look around the boutique studio that made a name in Memphis for almost 19 years. My family made the eight hour journey back to Memphis on Friday and plan to take 1 of 2 truckloads to storage in Greenville, South Carolina and Travelers Rest, South Carolina. The second is late Jan and maybe a third trip if necessary in Feb. We are leaving plenty of equipment for our remaining clients onsite training with Misty.

I just want Memphis and readers of our posts to know that Energy Fitness was possible and continues to be possible because of my awesome and supportive husband Mark Tittle and his entrepreneurial skills. He’s even supporting me learning a new occupation to enhance my knowledge and skill set with massage therapy school all through this Covid mess. My expected graduation date in Greenville, South Carolina is late Feb. 2021. Then study and take the licensing exam to be a Licensed Massage Therapist. This will make my job easier as a personal trainer because then I can manipulate soft tissue and help clients recover more from injuries or nagging pains.

We started Energy Fitness almost 19 years ago because Mark saw my talents and the way I help people achieve their goals while inspiring and training them myself or via my staff that were carefully hand picked and the right fit for our clients.  It wasn’t all peaches and cream in the early years of starting the business and having your husband tell you that your job “is just a hobby”, we’ve gotten past that as I began to pay myself / the household an acceptable amount as well as him hearing many clients sing my praises and having a business introduce us to so many people that we’ve met along the way that may be lifelong friends.

Usually I have these blog posts finished a few days or at least by lunch the day before it goes out to our list. Even in the craziest time of packing up the studio for round one of taking stuff to storage before finding the right location/space in our new town I found the time to speak with a client via phone and it’s just so heart warming to have someone tell you how much you have meant to them and training their family members also. Those that know me personally know that I don’t get emotional very often nor do I like to ask others for help. I have to say that a sadness crept in earlier in the week as I neared the arrival in Memphis and the start of a closing the Memphis chapter in my life. So many good things happened in my time in Memphis since 1997 like being the Director of the Downtown YMCA right out of Graduate School, meeting my husband, having two boys that can always call Memphis their hometown, and building so many meaningful relationships.

Having been around fitness facilities for over 30 years music is often in the background. Trends have changed where in bigger gyms or Y’s you see lots of clients listening to their own music of choice. No longer is a big box gym known as a place to be social if the majority of people have ear phones or ear buds in and cranked up. Especially in the year 2020 known as a shift in social behavior with social distancing and limited capacity at many facilities. Online fitness classes having people geared up to workout right from their homes or as they travel to onsite hotel gyms is another way you might see people wearing ear buds or headphones. Just protect your hearing and keep that volume lower! We all know by know that the grocery stores tend to play music to make you buy more based on mood and feelings you have when hearing the songs if you pay attention to them.

Remember aerobics and step group classes being all the rage starting in the 80s? Did you know that the music selection or list was typically a certain beats per minute depending on the level of intensity the instructor was teaching the class. Then we moved onto music apps where you can get beast mode or meditation beats per minute giving you a list of songs or creating choices in these ranges. You can type in healing music for different areas of the body on YouTube and there are lots of choices now.

Let’s talk music for healing in terms of frequencies or hertz

Whether you’re relatively new to soothing sounds or are a seasoned listener, the term ‘Solfeggio frequencies’ might be entirely new to you. Solfeggio frequencies refer to specific tones of sound that help with and promote various aspects of body and mind health. These frequencies are reputed to date back to ancient history and said to be the fundamental sounds used in both Western Christianity and Eastern Indian religions, chanted by the Gregorian Monks and in ancient Indian Sanskrit chants. In college I had a Gregorian Chants Cd and Enigma which I found zen and still I enjoy this type of chill music when I feel I need it.

Research has been done showing the Gregorian and Sanskrit chants had the most positive, even healing, effects by increasing UV light absorption between 5 to 9 percent. The classical music increased UV absorption by small amounts. And rock music decreased UV light absorption, harming the DNA.

Music that is tuned to the 440 hertz which makes you tired, oppressed and other negative symptoms versus 432 hertz is considered “cerebral” music that aids in the listener’s cognitive development. There is a whole conspiracy theory on 440 hz vs 432 just google it or ask a true music professional. Over and over again 432 seems to be the one for being present and connected to the earth and full of calming the mind.

There are numerous YouTube videos for specific healing goals if you just type in hertz or frequency for your desired result.

Quick note on sleeping, remember that Lebron James gets minimum of eight hours then naps another 2 hours.

Where do you need healing? Try 30 minutes to 1 hour or longer depending on goal. Music can be calming to animals as well.

HOW CAN YOU USE THIS INFORMATION?

Think about times when certain music annoys you versus when you are feeling the vibe. There really is something to it.

Have you received a massage and the only music played every time is on the 432 hertz and the therapist didn’t do any energetic massage strokes to wake you up towards the end of the massage. Ask the therapist next time if they can play music for the mood in which you wish to be. Kind of like setting an intention! Need more energy maybe ask for 963 hz music or do your own research at home and see what you like when you are in different moods. Pharrell’s song Happy is 963 hz, Life House – Just You and Me and Eminem – Not Afraid(not censored).

All the others at the 963 hz frequency are mostly metaphysical vibes, god healing frequency and spa/cosmos type music which may be what you need. Be mindful that we operate on a natural body cycle known as circadian rhythm and can change when you introduce alcohol, unhealthy foods and stress you throw off your rhythm.

For the past at least 10 years every time I turn around I am reading something about the benefits of licorice. I have mentioned to our clients at Energy Fitness personal training, nutrition coaching and massage therapy studio that they may wish to consider trying some licorice tea as an introductory for stress relief. It can also aid in reducing belly fat from too much cortisol production from the stress. There are more than 300 different compounds in licorice, some of which have antiviral and antimicrobial properties.

Did you know Licorice is a legume that grows about 5 feet tall? That means it’s in the bean category. When people think of licorice, they usually imagine the black, chewy candy you can buy in the store. You may be thinking it’s just so strong a taste I can’t bear to eat everyday. It definitely has a very unique taste which stops your taste buds in its tracks. What if you could bypass the tongue and go for a supplement? After reading the benefits you may wanna give it a try. There is a licorice variety that is native to the U.S called Glycyrrhiza lepidota, though it’s much less intense in flavor. Glycyrrhiza uralensis is also known as Chinese licorice. It has a sweet flavor and multiple medicinal uses.

Licorice has a history of use in food and medicine for over a millennium. This tasty root comes packed with potent polyphenol micronutrients that have potent medicinal effects for curing anything from nausea to heartburn, and leaky gut. It’s called mulethi in some parts of Asia. The licorice plant is native to the lands of Asia and Southern Europe, and some call it a weed in some of those areas.  Its most popular uses are candy, sweeteners, and flavoring in tobacco products. This widely-used herb has established health benefits, and folk medicine uses it to treat all types of inflammatory diseases.

Glycyrrhizin is the active polyphenol compound found in licorice, and it’s also responsible for the side-effects of consuming too much licorice, such as high blood pressure. As a result, many food producers and supplement companies now produce licorice extract for use in therapeutic and food applications – but with the glycyrrhizin removed. Consuming too much licorice can cause potassium loss which can raise blood pressure.

Benefits of Licorice

  1. Improve digestive health which may be affected by Gerd (acid reflux), reduce toxic bacteria in the gut

2) Beneficial in a weight loss diet by ramping up the metabolism. Many people that struggle with weight and controlling appetite would benefit from Licorice because consumption affects the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone – thereby reducing appetite. Now don’t go on a mad rush to order or buy licorice because alone it won’t have any significant fat-burning effect. Remember it’s all about finding tweaks in habits and what works for you and combining it with regular exercise and a healthy diet to provide a synergistic effect that helps you burn more body fat. Exercise, eat healthy 80% of the time and then stick of licorice for dessert or try one of the suggested protocols below.

3) Enhance Liver health. Drinking in moderation. Keep in mind everyone has a different idea of what moderation is – 1 glass a few times per week as a trainer is more than necessary if you are trying to have optimal health and always trying to lose weight. Drinking in moderation the liver produces enzymes to help repair the damage but those that drink more the liver can’t repair fast enough and hence fat is stored. Try a few licorice chews on the way to the bar as a preventive test drive to better liver health.

4) Improve Cognitive Health & relieve fatigue (think brain and quick thinking): licorice, namely carbenoxolone, has been shown in reducing stress and slowing brain aging that may lead to the development of dementia. Licorice also contains liquiritigenin, has an anti-inflammatory effect and can have a positive effect on brain cells, showing promise as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. Other reports out there suggest that is could help prevent other brain and cognitive disorders like Parkinson’s and boost memory and aid in treatment of depression. Here’s another component present in licorice, amorphousness which has anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to reduce blood sugar, inhibit the development of insulin resistance, and prevent Type-2 diabetes. Research shows that licorice helps slow the progression of neurological symptoms and provides relief from chronic fatigue.

5) Improve sleep: Who doesn’t want to sleep better? One specific type of licorice root, called Glycyrrhiza glabra, is known to induce sleep and enhance sleep duration. Two other common compounds in licorice root, namely Gabriel and liquiritigenin, also help induce sleep, reducing the time it takes you to fall asleep at night. These compounds increase the length of non-REM sleep without disturbing deep sleep patterns. Sleep deprivation transpires when a person gets less sleep than they need to feel awake and alert, due to the brain not being able to clear toxins from neural pathways during sleep.

Licorice has also been proven to help with eczema, heartburn, and cough. It may also be effective for cankers, dental plaque, bleeding, high cholesterol, high potassium, IBS, and hot flashes. If you have high blood pressure or are pregnant, you may want to talk to your doctor before using licorice medicinally.

WARNING: Even though I am touting the benefits of licorice remember that more isn’t always better. You should never consume excessive amounts of licorice in food or supplement form.

If you just enjoy the taste of licorice then go bold but remember that as with anything dosage and consistency is key.  Try traditional medicinals licorice root tea or the Yogi teas and of course straight licorice chews if you dare, just watch for sugar content from the companies that are trying to make it more appealing by amping up sugar content.

At Energy Fitness personal training studio not only do we do personal training and massage therapy we also do nutrition coaching, meal plans and supplement recommendations. In early March when I went to pick up a marketing banner at The Mail Center in Memphis, the owner Mark asked me what supplements I would recommend for this virus going around as one of his customers said Selenium. At the time didn’t have a quick answer for him as someones supplement recommendations has many factors to consider.

Since we are all so different in our nutritional lifestyles, activity level, genetics and stress levels the recommendation we make for supplements is customized after having a conversation with you on all these factors.

What does selenium do?

Selenium is an essential mineral, meaning it must be obtained through your diet. Your body relies on selenium, an important mineral, for many of its basic functions, from reproduction to fighting infection. It’s only needed in small amounts but plays a major role in important processes in your body, including your metabolism and thyroid function.

The amount of selenium in different foods depends on the amount of selenium in the soil where the food was grown. Rain, evaporation, pesticides, and pH levels can all affect selenium levels in soil. That makes selenium deficiency more common in certain parts of the world, though it’s relatively rare in the United States. As you already know the United States is the perfect environment to create obesity and heart disease with the SAD diet (Standard American Diet) that includes too many processed foods and sugar.

Selenium acts as an antioxidant, may reduce risk of certain cancers, may prevent heart disease and mental decline, boost your immune system, reduce asthma symptoms,

Regardless of where you live, certain factors can make it harder for your body to absorb selenium. For example, you may have difficulty absorbing selenium if you are receiving dialysis, living with HIV, have a gastrointestinal condition such as Crohn’s disease, Graves disease or hypothyroidism.

An international team of researchers, led by Professor Margaret Rayman at the University of Surrey, has identified a link between the COVID-19 cure rate and regional selenium status in China.Publishing their findings in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers using data (up to 18 February), investigated possible links between selenium levels in the body and cure or death rates of those with the COVID-19 virus in China. Foods that contain selenium
How many of these do you or will you add to your diet?

Brazil Nuts – 1 oz/6-8 nuts = 544 mcg (great but not great if you are trying to reduce your fat and calorie intake)
Fish – yellowfin tuna – 3 oz = 92 mcg and sardines, oysters, clams, halibut, shrimp, salmon, and crab, which contain amounts between 40 and 65 mcg.
Ham – 3 oz = 42 mcg (be prepared to pay more for pork as prices will likely go up due to covid complications of processing and likely culling of almost 1.5 million pigs sadly)
Beef / Chicken / Turkey / 20-30 mcg per serving
Brown Rice – 1 cup = 19 mcg of selenium
1 Hard Boiled egg = 20 mcg
Sunflower seeds – 1/4 cup = 19 mcg
Mushrooms- 100 grams = 12 mcg
Oatmeal- 1 cup = 13 mcg
Frozen cooked spinach–  1 cup = 11 mcg
Milk & Yogurt – 1 cup = 8 mcg
Lentils – 1 cup = 6 mcg

Because many of us get into habits and eat the same foods because they are easy or because you just get stuck in a “I don’t know what else to eat!” rut we may not be getting enough variety in our diet causing vitamin or mineral imbalances. If you aren’t getting enough selenium in your diet or other nutrients that your body may need then consider either a source supplement or a generalized multi-vitamin or multi-mineral supplement. Supplement simply means giving your body what it needs from an outside source. Keep in mind that for fat soluble vitamins like vitamins A,D,E and K these should be taken with a little bit of fat to help increase their potential for good in your body.

Who can relate to that relentless specific spot for back or hip pain. Sitting in a car for hours driving or riding and your back just feels tight or tense is not fun. Even just desk sitting for hours can create a back insult that may linger. Lots of walking or standing depending on your pelvic position can also create this same effect. Don’t get me started on high heels and back pain.

We’ve got several clients that we routinely have to show a variety of exercises that can help reduce or eliminate back pain. Aside from just holding a stretch for 3-5 minutes think about stretching as something you may consider incorporating into your life on a more regular basis. This post kind of seems like groundhog day as I believe last month I did a post on it attacking the subject at a different angle.

After 20 years of personal training I have deducted that this is for sure the component of fitness that is the hardest to instill consistency in our clients. Of course we have the hyper-flexible that love to stretch all their favorite ranges of motion. Then there is the tight muscle clients that associate stretching with pain but always feel better after they have stretched.

If you do break into a stretch more often like say morning right out of bed for movement type stretches holding each for 5-10 seconds flowing gently into the next stretch and occasionally throughout the day or just morning and evening you will find it hurts less.

Try this stretch that I recorded this week for our client complaining of his chronic tight back. He said “Will you take a pic of this so I can remember what we did”.  Great idea…for compliance! I went one step further and took video so you can see the move in action and steal it. I wanted him to work some core at the same time. I had him perform 25 reps each side and be aware of his breathing as well..no breath holding.

This was not the right exercise for another client in the same session that had back pain flared up from tensing up from going up and coming down the Statue of Liberty. I had her do different static stretches and then put rock tape on her back.

Our packages at Energy Fitness include meal plans so the clients can have the best chance at nutritional freedom and education about meals that are healthy along with teaching meal timing. We have over 25 meal plans and choose a few for each client based on their habits, goals and food choices. We do realize that there are different levels of commitment for eating healthy and sometimes convenience becomes a factor. So many times in our society the quick foods become the whole meal plan instead of just a rare occasion. Ask yourself why you eat healthy or wish for the desire to want to eat healthy. Healthy skin, better sleep, less brain fog, shed pounds, have more energy and better overall feeling of well being should top your list. If those aren’t your motivation then maybe you can start with having those as mantras when you get off the plan or don’t even have a plan.

This post is just to give you a few options and get your brain working to find other alternatives to junk food or super high calorie fast food. I mean you really aren’t any busier than anyone else and we have lots of executive, successful clients and busy working moms that find the time for eat healthy.

When travelling with the family out of town when pressed for time we pop in a grocery stores and just grab something healthy like tuna pack, salad, and some chopped veggies or gluten free crackers. Sometimes there’s a salad bar or If they have sushi I might grab that if no added sugars. I am an ingredient detective and you should be too. You should be able to pronounce the foods and chemicals that you put in your mouth and body.

There are different levels of fast food. There’s the drive through option, Then there are options like food Bars or walk up service type of service menus as well as grocery store pop ins.

Arby’s: Roast Turkey Farmhouse Salad, Total Calories: 240, Total Fat: 13 grams

Chick-Fil-A: Grilled Chicken Cool Wrap,Total Calories: 350, Total Fat: 13 grams

So that’s 7 fast food now I’ll share my fast food ideas:

bumble and bumble tuna and crackers or chicken and crackers (great for kids) pair with side salad or cherry tomatoes and spinach leaves or sweet baby peppers.

salad to go kits from grocery store (i forego the dressing and eat it bare unless there are lemon wedges handy).

pack my own to go lunch and snacks of salad, veggies and a protein like veggie patty, boiled egg(s), tuna salad

Snacks like aloha bars, vega bars, rice cake and nut butter individual packets (they come in almond, watermelon seed, cashews, sunflower and peanuts in which I never eat peanuts due to mold and cancer) are great to keep handy. I buy cliff, power crunch and zbar’s for the kids. Protein shakes are a great go to meal or snack when no other options.

As a personal trainer and avid athlete across many sports I really enjoy the benefits of strong and tone arms. Many times at Energy Fitness personal training studio Downtown Memphis we get phone calls of clients stating they want to work on their arm strength and have toned arms. I have included in this post 3 bicep exercises. One exercise with a cable that is available in most gyms or fitness facilities, one with a resistance band and lastly one with a dumbbell.

This one is great as facing away from the stack you are less likely to cheat or round the shoulder forward. Try 2 sets of 8 heavy and do negative or try 2 sets of 10-12 reps at count of 4 (2 seconds up and 2-4 seconds on the down motion). Keep the shoulder blades back in their pockets and assume good posture and breathing throughout the whole exercise.

1 Arm Bicep curl – pictured with a resistance loop. Can also be performed with a band with two handles stepped on with both feet so you can do a double bicep curl. With bands typically you will want to do more reps. Try 2 sets of 20 reps resting 1 minute in between sets.

 

The first two bicep curls are in the supinated position (where your forearm is rotated in the palm up position). This works on the short head of the bicep which is the muscle that pops. You also need to work on the second head of the biceps (hence bi in the word bicep) so you can have muscular balance and all around definition. Be sure to not rotate the shoulder forward. One tip is to keep your elbow in the meaty part of the leg, specifically the vastus medialis and press your leg in towards your elbow as you curl the weight to the top position. Be sure to breathe and go at an even pace. If you are going heavier then use the other arm to slightly help get the weight in the up position and let go and use the muscle in the down position. Notice the position of my hand-this is called a DB hammer curl. Try 2 sets of 10-12 or go heavy and assist with the other arm for 2 sets of 8 reps.
