Electrolytes are analogous to the motor oil in your car—they don’t make the engine run, but they’re absolutely necessary to keep everything running smoothly. Proper functioning of the digestive, nervous, cardiac, and muscular systems depends on adequate electrolyte levels.

One aspect of the personal trainers job at Energy Fitness personal training studio in Memphis is educating clients on pre & post workout nutrition as well as proper hydration. Electrolytes are chemicals that form ions in body fluids. They help make sure specific bodily functions run at optimal levels. Too few electrolytes will cause the body to cramp.

To see this science first hand and how the numbers can change as opposed to the illusive “they say I’m suppose to drink electrolytes” has been fascinating. Several years ago Energy Fitness purchased a Bioelectrical Analysis Machine as part of Tonya’s Metagenics First Line Therapy Certification suggestion. The BIA machine really gives in depth reports. There are numerous biomarkers in one of the reports with three of them being level of hydration, percentage of extracellular water and intracellular water. Ideally you want 60% intracellular to 40% extracellular water. When the report would say as it often would for me that my extracellular water was well above what it should be that meant a combination of things that I might need to change. Extracellular water is important because it helps control the movement of electrolytes, allows oxygen delivery to the cells, and clears waste from metabolic processes.

Side note…Benefit to lifting weights or body resistance exercises. A major influence on our body is the amount of fatty tissue and lean body mass that we carry. Lean body mass carries much more body water than body fat. An adult man will be about 60% water compared to an adult woman that will be about 55% water. If you are physically active, that number will increase depending on your lean body mass.

With so many people trying these low carb or keto diets, fasting, sweating, breathing and overall just being active it’s important to know and track your body’s hydration level. This can mean the difference from being able to think clearly to performing well while working out or doing daily chores. An obvious monitor of hydration is the color of your urine. If your urine is faint yellow to clear then you are NOT getting enough electrolytes or water. If you are peeing often then you are also not hydrated properly. If you are or have had bouts of loose or runny stools then you are not hydrated properly. If you are sweating or breathing hard you are losing body water.

So do YOU need to focus on electrolytes balance?

The biggest take away for you today in this post is for you to know that sodium and potassium aka electrolyes are carriers of nutrients into and out of your cells.

If you aren’t hydrated properly what needs to
GET INTO the cells CAN’T
and what needs to (toxins) GET OUT of the cells CAN’T.

The truth is that the human body needs only a minute amount of sodium to function normally. We require a mere 500 mg of sodium each day, athletes maybe 2,000 mg. This is easily supplied by natural, unprocessed foods. However, the average American consumes approximately 6,000-8,000 mg per day, well above the upper end of the recommended dose of 2,300 – 2,400 mg/day.

“Going to a party and want to avoid drinking but don’t want to answer a lot of questions or pressures to drink wine or other alcoholic beverages? Why not pack your own electrolytes. They come in different flavors and hence different colors. You can get the fizzy tablets or the powder you just stir or shake in water.”

For those of you that don’t know how active I am I don’t have time or space nor does anyone wish to read a diatribe of my activities, just know that I feel I am performing better getting in 32oz. of doctor recommended electrolytes daily. I knew for many years that I didn’t get enough but I didn’t want to drink the sugar laden ones available on the market. With so many advances in supplements there are so many more natural and sugar free alternatives out there now.

You have to just pick the right one for you and just consider it part of your monthly food/health budget. Here’s a few below I recommend:

Dr. Prices I tried but didn’t work for me as I felt like it made me constipated. My family does fine with this mix so I gave rest to them. It comes in many flavors and avail online (amazon).

Nuun…This is my favorite and they are convenient as they come in tubes and can be found at several local grocery stores and available online (i get mine from amazon in Tropical flavor, I hate grape flavor as it tastes like wine…you might like that though). I consume one tab per day and one vega serving as seen below.

Metagenics has one that’s great also. Here’s a link to purchase. I haven’t tried the Hammer endurolytes fizz tablets but when I was training and competing in long races I loved their other products.

Remember that just drinking water may not cut it. If you are eating a hefty amount of carbs your body is storing 3-4 grams of water per every 1 gram of carbohydrates which is why if you go on a low carb diet you start losing weight quickly (it’s water weight….aka electrolytes possibly) and here come the headaches for many.

There are many factors involved in keeping your body running optimally.

Be your own health expert and take care of what you have like it’s a prized racehorse.

Happy Hydrating!

We go in bouts at Energy Fitness teaching our personal training clients all the different ways to incorporate inversion into their life. We will often be showing one client different versions of how to go upside down and tell the benefits and another client will hear the benefits and see the exercises and want to get in on the action. Oddly enough with my 500+ pics I had to take more pics just for this post.

Just to be clear before you dismiss this upside down thing for yourself know that there are many different levels so you can start where you body speaks to you. Pictures peppered in this post to show you. Not pictured is plow pose, teeter gravity boots, yoga swing and other aerial yoga cloth props. Of course I’m sure I’m missing something like hanging off bed or couch but you have lots of ones to try. For the wall poses see if a friend or family member can grab a leg and assist you. See precautions below.

My own testimonial: I’ve been doing inversions for about a year now and have regained my 1/2 inch I lost in height most likely from 30 years of running. I’m a believer! I initially started with only 1-2 times per week for about 30 seconds and progressed to 5-6 days per week with totally 3 minutes each session with small rest breaks before going into different poses.

Inversion therapy is a great way to defy gravity and bring relief to common back and joint pains. Most people understand that inversion therapy can help your back but do not realize the benefits it can have for your joints too.

Every joint in your body feels the pressure of weight and gravity each day, and this causes natural wear and tear. While inversion therapy provides relief for this you also need to promote joint health.

Inversion therapy is a technique where you are suspended upside down to stretch the spine and relieve back pain. The theory is that by shifting the body’s gravity, pressure eases off the back while also providing traction for the spine.

For these reasons, inversion therapy may be beneficial for people with:

  • chronic lower back pain (great for runners after pounding and jostling from a few or many miles sitting, and too much bending of the spine)
  • poor circulation
  • sciatica
  • scoliosis

In theory, inversion exercises should help the spine by:

  • creating more protective fluid around spinal discs
  • removing waste from the spine
  • decreasing inflammation
  • increasing blood circulation through surrounding muscles
  • assist the lymphatic system drain toxins from the body

Other factors that may cause complications include:

  • retinal detachment
  • pregnancy
  • obesity
  • use of blood clotting medications

It takes time to adjust to inversion therapy. It’s best to start off in shorter increments (slowly building from one-minute sets to three) to get used to the process. This can help reduce side effects such as dizziness or muscle strain. Be careful not to overdo it.

Too nervous or scared to hand upside down without help? Try an inversion table.

Adventurous? Find a park or get some anti-gravity boots

Energy Fitness personal training studio in Memphis is more than just a training and nutrition coaching studio. We are about helping clients feel and look their best. We asked our Massage Therapist Mae Jensen, LMT to do this post on facial rolling and massage so you can be in the know and put your best face forward. These little inexpensive tools can be a great addition to your body and skincare routine. In early May if you live in the Memphis area you are very aware of the Tennessee snow (cottonwood) in the air and undoubtedly feel or have felt the toll it takes on your sinuses.

Let’s take a minute to talk about facial massage and our lymphatic system

The lymph system is kind of like the trash collector of our body, gathering up toxins and taking them to removal sites, our kidneys/liver and urinary system. Unlike our cardiovascular system there aren’t any valves or pumps to move things along so sometimes things stay stagnant. Did you know that weight lifting naturally helps to stimulate the lymphatic system? Massage offers benefits by using light pressure and rolling motions thus helping flush out the pipes and get rid of the symptoms of a backed up lymph system such as:

  • fluid retention

  • puffy/red eyes

  • breakouts

Here are two tools that you might want in your facial care toolbox! Left is Jade roller. Right is Rose Quartz Acupoint Tool Set. (click on images to see on Amazon)

So how do we start?

1. Apply an oil or lotion to you face to help reduce friction, you can use an SPF lotion in the morning and a nice collagen or vitamin E oil in the evenings to help protect from sun damage and wrinkles.
2. Using your fingers or a Jade roller start at your inner cheeks, by your nose and stroke towards your ears. Most skin care professionals suggest doing each motion 10 times or for one minute
3. Move on to the forehead next, starting at your eyebrows and moving upwards to your hairline then sweep outwards at the top, repeating 10 times or for 1 minute. (I like to additionally roll the eyebrows because all those moments furrowing at the kids to do chores seem to tighten this muscle creating deeper forehead lines. Tonya)
4. Next starting at the center of your chin move outwards and up along the jaw to help naturally lift the skin, repeating 10 times or for 1 minute. (I like to additionally roll the jaw muscle to alleviate any TMJ tension, Tonya)
5. Once you’ve finished the face its time to move all the drainage to your main lymph nodes. Locate the jawline, at the end of the jawbone use gentle downward strokes moving to the mid collarbones, taking care not to massage your carotid artery.
6. Finish off by gentling tapping all over your face, like you’re playing a piano to stimulate you skin and wake up the lymph system.Image result for facial rolling map

Take this time to really connect and thank your body for the protection it offers us.

Don’t forget we offer an amazing facial upgrade to any of our massage services with Mae using the all natural products from the M’lis skin care line.

The M’Lis face wash wakes your skin with natural caffeine from green tea, followed by an invigorating exfoliation with apricot seeds, we then tone and tighten with natural collagen and clay mask. Lastly we give your skin a deep moisture treatment using Apple stem cells and a cool jade stone roller to seal and protect your pores. Be on the lookout for some amazing new skin care products coming this summer. We’re all about natural products!

With high fat low-carb lifestyles on the rise, it’s important to get enough sodium & potassium. Here at Energy Fitness, Downtown Memphis, nutritional coaching is a huge part of what we do to compliment our personal training. In keeping with our mission to inspire optimal health we must educate you on nutritional science.

On a low-carb diet, your insulin levels will go down and your body will start shedding excess sodium and potassium. This causes people to get rid of excess bloating within a few days of low-carb eating. Sodium is a crucial electrolyte and low sodium levels can become problematic when your kidneys dump too much of it. Feeling lightheaded, fatigue, and headaches are a few of the side effects. The best way to alleviate or avoid these side effects is to add more salt to your diet. Here are a few good options below that pack more punch than your average table salt.

Don’t just load up on sodium alone you need the potassium along with it to avoid bloating. Potassium can help you to avoid muscle cramps and is also essential to muscle contraction.

Science: If you don’t have the right balance of sodium/potassium aka electrolytes then what needs to get into the cell can’t and what needs to get out can’t. Electrolytes are a carrier of nutrients!

  • Pink Himalayan Salt- Contains over 84 minerals and trace elements, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron.
  • Sea Salt- Is produced through evaporation of ocean water or water from salt water lakes, usually with little processing. This leaves behind certain trace minerals and elements.
  • Vegetable or Vegan Bouillon (Rapunzel or similar brands)

Often we see clients come in for their sessions fatigued and just not inspired to work out that day, in which we recommend a vegan vegetable bouillon or broth (even bone broth) but you will never hear me personally recommend bone broth. In fact, I keep the bouillon cubes on hand at Energy Fitness and make up a hot cup on the spot for these such clients. Sometimes they instantly feel better, but definitely the next time I see them the remark that it made a world of a difference in their energy level.  This is a much better option than chugging a sugar or artificially sweetened electrolyte sports drink.

*If you have high blood pressure issues always consult your Dr. before adding extra sodium to your diet.

Are you one of the many that over-indulge over the Holidays, and then end up starting the New Year feeling sluggish and out of shape? The personal trainers at Energy Fitness, downtown Memphis often get an influx of new clients  wanting to get a jump start on the Holidays starting as early as October. Wouldn’t it be fun to look and feel your best this year while catching up with family and friends over the Holidays? (Do you really want your friends to see you out of shape hiding yourself in baggy clothes or hear the broken record of how everyone is going to start working out and eating right when the new year gets here?) Personally, I think January is the worst time ever to be motivated to make such a lifestyle change. I mean really…it’s cold, dark, and uninspiring! Do the hard work when covered up with long sleeves and pants and be ready for the big reveal when spring hits.

What simple strategies below are you willing to implement NOW?

If you don’t already have one, start an exercise routine. No time like the present, why wait until AFTER the holidays? All of those Holiday treats should be good motivation.

check out our 10 Week Intro. program

Plan your meals ( and your treats) Eating meals lower in calories and heavy on the veggies during the Holiday season leave you a little more room for those treats. If you are eating clean 80% of the time the other 20% of the time you can indulge. (You can call them “treat days” I straight up call them binges in the most positive way possible. I like to save my binge times for one day and have say 3 doughnuts all at once. You might say WOW that’s crazy..Think about it…it’s really a better option to go big and get it out of your system than having a little every other day that add up to far more calories in the long run than my 3 doughnuts once a month). Just don’t keep the treats hanging around the house or in sight.

Pack your lunch for work (you won’t have a choice but to eat what you have brought)

Snacking..Be aware of how much you have been snacking, and have healthy snack options on hand in the office, in your purse or briefcase, home or car (be careful of the car as sometimes it can be a cue for mindless snacking).

Ditch the sodas

Drink more water.  Divide your body weight in half and try to drink that many ounces daily.

Cut back the alcohol

Get in more steps. Park in the farthest spot, take the stairs, keep moving!

Sleep more! There is youth and vibrancy in at least 7 hours of sleep.

Track your results. Nothing keeps us as motivated as seeing proof our healthy habits are working.

At Energy Fitness we are here to help motivate you and provide you with all the resources you need to be your best self this Holiday season (and always…my motto is be beach ready all year long.)

Remember we have a limited time 10 week program on special that ends on 12-28-18, check it out and see if its the right fit for you!

If we can use mantras for our personal well-being and for sticking to our nutrition plan, then we can most certainly use them for staying on track with our fitness as well.

If you missed the other posts I wrote about personal mantras and food mantras, go check those out, too!

Food Mantras

Personal Mantras

Using mantras helps us to create new behaviors automatically. It helps us to not have to think about working out, it’s just what we would do (like taking a shower).

Watch the video above to get some examples I personally use to create my healthy lifestyle. It’s something ANYONE can do.

Here are some additional tips:  try to squeeze in some type of exercise throughout your daily routine. Skip the elevator and take the stairs up to your office. When you go to the grocery store, park far away from the entrance to get in some extra steps. When you’re sitting in traffic, think about pressing your lower back into the seat and engage your abs. Every little bit helps!

It happens a lot more often than you’d think. We call them saboteurs, or “crabs in the bucket.” So how do you handle it? Check out the video below to get my tips on how to handle these people. OR, if you are a “crab,” how can you change that?

Most importantly, know that you are not alone and that you can overcome these negative comments.

What if you could shrink your belly with the addition of the tasteless amino acid called L-Glutamine?

As the owner of Energy Fitness, a boutique personal training, nutrition coaching and healing arts services studio in Memphis for over 16 years I’ve been asked countless times, “what’s the easiest and fastest way to lose belly fat or lose body fat?” After I take a breath and a long sigh, I begin to ask probing questions about an individuals nutrition and exercise habits. My motto I recently stole from The China Study Book “Nutrition is a Scientific Disipline”.

How do I know I have these symptoms?

Well… How do you know you don’t have them? Be your own self-care detective and hire professionals when necessary. Are you at an ideal body weight and body fat for your height? Do you sleep soundly and get enough quality sleep? Do you have at least 2 normal bowel movements EVERYDAY about the consistency of a ripe banana and shaped like a sausage? How’s your skin? Do you exercise and “eat healthy” and your weight just won’t budge?

L-Glutamine may help rid your body of these symptoms:

  • excess body fat
  • leaky gut
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • acne or eczema
  • fatigue
  • other gut-related issues

L-Glutamine is pretty top-notch when it comes to gut health and there are many benefits that have been demonstrated in various studies showing it to drastically improve gut health in as little at 10 days without any nasty side effects.

Benefits of taking L-Glutamine (in preferred powdered form)

  • repair for your stomach lining so you can get a flatter stomach
  • stop cravings
  • reduce appetite
  • reduce cravings for sugar and carbs
  • reduce cravings for alcohol

Now don’t go thinking I’m giving you a miracle supplement suggestion so you can go off the rails and eat or drink whatever you want. However, it is truly a “hero” when it comes to helping keep your gut healthy and your body slim. We carry L-Glutamine onsite for our clients, but realize not everyone reading this blog post can stop by, so here’s our next best recommendation.

Energy Fitness loves Metagenics for their product quality.  The Glutagenics is combined with licorice root and aloe leaf so it can help restore the gut even faster. A properly functioning digestive system is critical to good health. A program such as the Metagenics 5R GI Restoration Program can support GI health through the following steps: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Regenerate, and Retain. Glutagenics offers powerful support for the Regenerate step of the 5R GI Restoration Program.

They also have a product I took that originally helped me called UltraGI Replenish which is a medical food and FDA approved.

When I mention the phrase “leaky gut” or talk about how many people may have little microscopic holes in their stomach I am never surprised by the horrified facial expressions or comments of disbelief or the “I don’t have that” syndrome.

Causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome:

  • Gluten
  • Potatoes
  • Food Allergies
  • Infections
  • Medications
  • Agressive Exercise
  • Pesticides
  • Plastics
  • GMO Foods

I’ve known about L-Glutamine for several years and would take it off and on but mostly for helping to give my body fuel for endurance training and long races. I knew it helped soothe my stomach during long periods of training without solid food. I started noticing that my stomach issues were less of a problem when taking the supplement so I began to do more research and now it’s part of my daily regimen. I said goodbye to leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome which now means less bloating and now I am absorbing all the nutrients of my food and want to help others get a healthy gut.

Bottom Line:

Consider consuming L-Glutamine in powder form twice a day for 4 weeks (in the morning and just before or after dinner) with a swallow of water or in your protein shake at breakfast (1 level teaspoon = 5 grams).

After the four weeks, consider taking 1 teaspoon a day with a protein shake for breakfast or with water in the morning.  If you happen to have sugar or alcohol consumption later in the day, then you may want to consume another teaspoon of L-Glutamine immediately afterwards.

One study on L-Glutamine showed that in less than a month, the women who took L-Glutamine had lost an average of over 6 pounds and 2 dress sizes. It helped people lose an extra 500 calories a day. If you are pregnant or nursing you should not take.

Is your brain or the imaginary person on your shoulder holding you back from fitness or nutrition success?

The personal trainers at Energy Fitness understand that while we are changing lives and habits to get people moving and eating better that we must put ownership on the one person in the way of our success our clients. No one can force you not to exercise or force something in your mouth and make you chew and shallow it!

Our brains are wired often times to let past experiences dictate what’s going to happen this time around before we’ve had a chance to even try. It’s a form of self-sabotage. So how do we overcome this?

Personal mantras--no this is not some type of chanting. It’s about changing our thoughts and our belief systems about ourselves. What if it was suddenly so much easier to achieve our goals just because we actually believed we could?! What could you accomplish with that in your arsenal?

Instead of focusing on the negative parts (like you’ll hear in the video), focus on the positives. Focus on the benefits of this lifestyle change and what you’ll gain.

You may have noticed by now that questions about fitness relating to how long a workout should be, how many reps a person should do, or how often should a workout routine be changed up, are all very relative. It all depends on what your goals are, how much time you’re committing to workout, what injuries (if any) you might have, and more.

But there some generalities that can be applied in order to answer the question as simply as possible. Watch the video below to learn more:

Also be sure not to quit before you’re really ready. Our minds always want to quit way before our bodies do. Stick with it and earn those results!
