Up until September I had only heard from my personal training clients how dry needling felt or helped with pain and tightness restrictions. I will share in another post or video why I am doing this prescribed therapy but let’s stick to the why dry needling is done and how it came about.
In September I went to a Sports Chiro and she did some on my forearm. When I asked my new physical therapist Jeffrey at Accelerated Physical Therapy here in Travelers Rest, SC about the history of dry needling he said they originally used larger needles. Physicians injected various substances including corticosteroids, analgesics, saline, etc. into trigger points until they finally discovered that just the dry needle alone was producing the desired response.They then eventually moved towards using the small sized acupuncture needles that were being used in the industry. During dry needling they are trying to elicit a muscle jump which isn’t the most comfortable thing ever but I’ve felt more pain before.
Thus far the results for me at least don’t seem to keep the pain relief lasting long enough. Maybe just a few days. The is often why this treatment is often not a stand alone solution. Stretching and strengthening is often prescribed along with maybe massage therapy, breathing exercises and neck traction if in the cervical region.
