The McKenzie Method is a reliable assessment process intended for all musculoskeletal problems, including pain in the back, neck and extremities (i.e., shoulder, knee, ankle etc.), as well as issues associated with sciatica, sacroiliac joint pain, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, muscle spasms and intermittent numbness in hands or feet. Developed by world-renowned expert physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in the 1950s, this well-researched, exercise based approach of assessment, diagnosis and treatment uses a comprehensive and clinically reasoned evaluation of patients.

Developed by a New Zealand physical therapist named Robin McKenzie, this method emphasizes self-treatment for pain in the back, neck, and peripheral joints. In 1980, he published his first book, “Treat Your Own Back” as a self-help guide to relieve low back pain caused by spinal misalignments and over-stretched ligaments. The McKenzie Method, also known as MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment), is a system that includes assessment (evaluation), diagnosis and treatment for the spine and extremities.

These exercises would be great for runners as they tend to have tight hamstrings, hip flexors, lower back, and abs. Performing stretches that bend the body backwards (the opposite way runners tend to bend) can help counteract the effects if done on a daily basis. Try a couple for a few minutes each day and let us know how you feel!

Should You Take This?

As a part of our Energize method of training  supplementation is one of the 6 components to success.  I have recently done extensive research on L-arginine and I am recommending it to several clients.  I’ve dropped an additional 2% body fat and lowered my blood pressure from 110/70 to 90/60 since incorporating L-arginine into my supportive fitness regime.  My resting heart rate has also dropped from 55 to 44 beats per minute.  As always, be sure to consult your physician before taking any medication or supplements of any kind.vitamin

What is L-arginine & Why It’s Important?

 L-arginine is an amino acid that is crucial for the body to make protein. L-arginine is found mostly in red meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. Your body converts L-arginine into nitric oxide and improves blood flow by expanding blood vessels with will alleviate chest pains, clogged arteries and headaches. It also encourages the release of growth hormone and insulin in the body.

Benefits of L-arginine

Some benefits of taking L-arginine supplements include:
– Improved Cardio Endurance
– Improved Immune System
– Lower Blood Pressure
– Improved Sexual Health
– Increased EnergyL-arginine has also been used to boost the immune system, treat male infertility and when used topically, to increase blood flow to cold hands and feet and improve wound healing time.

Risks

Dosing adjustments may be necessary in people with bleeding disorders.

Caution should be used in those with diabetes.  Blood glucose levels should be monitored.

Use caution when taking phosphodiesterase inhibitors (Viagra®), due to a theoretical risk of additive blood vessel widening and blood pressure lowering.

Use with caution in postmenopausal patients, as night sweats and flushing have been reported.

Use with caution in patients with herpes virus, as L-arginine may increase the risk of herpes simplex cold sores.  This interaction can be mitigated by taking L-lysine supplements about 2 hours separately from L-arginine.

Arginine may cause bloating; diarrhea; endocrine changes; gastrointestinal discomfort; hives; increased blood urea nitrogen, serum creatine, and serum creatinine; increased inflammatory response; leg restlessness, lower back pain; nausea, numbness (with arginine injection); rash; reduction in hematocrit; severe tissue necrosis with extravasation; systemic acidosis; or venous irritation. In heart disease patients, arginine may cause high white blood cell count, increased post-heart attack deaths, lack of energy and strength, and vertigo or increased blood pressure (in heart transplant patients).

Laura Charlton enrolled the help of Memphis Personal Trainer Tonya Tittle to help in achieving her health and fitness goals.

Following knee surgery it was harder for Laura to accomplish her daily activities, so she decided to take charge of her health and fitness.  She asked her sister Ellen to join with her and, together they started training at Energy Fitness Personal Training Studio Downtown Memphis.

Since she overhauled her diet and took her lunch and snacks to work, Laura has lost 60 pounds and trimmed down from a size 16 to a size 8/10. She feels better than ever and is now a proud role model for her child as to how and why you should take care of yourself.

Not only is Laura more comfortable with her body, her cholesterol is much better (lower) than it used to be.  Being a pharmacist, she knows how expensive medications can be, so she made a choice to invest  in her health as opposed to later on when you get sick and need to pay for medical expenses/medication

You can read Laura’s story in the commercial appeal here: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2012/dec/31/success-story-sisters-joined-forces-for-journey/

With the help of Memphis personal trainer Tonya Tittle and her staff, Energy Fitness client Ellen Whittington drop down from a size 14 to a size 8!

It all started when Ellen’s sister Laura Charlton asked her to be her workout buddy.  The sisters met with Tonya at our South Main gym, Energy Fitness Personal Training Studio, and started toward their leaner, toner and stronger bodies. Ellen is so happy that her clothes fit better now.

Ellen’s goal is to be healthy and have energy to chase her kids around. Making time to workout is sometimes a challenge, but Ellen will not hesitate to bring her kids to Energy Fitness (and we encourage it) when she comes in for her sessions. It really is the same thing as taking the kids to their extra-curricular activities.  She is also being a role model for her kids and showing them that you have to take care of yourself. The picture to the right was sent by Ellen via text to Tonya with this comment: “Had this custom made last November (one year of success)”

At Energy Fitness here in Memphis we are always trying to tell our clients that it is a mind/body connection and those that get that simple concept are the ones that make the biggest changes in the shortest amount of time (get the weight off and keep it off!)

Take the quiz below (we stole from ACSM Health & Fitness Journal) and then score yourself.

Circle the number that indicates how confident you are that you could be physically active in each of the following situations:

SCALE
1= not at all confident
2=slightly confident
3=moderately confident
4=very confident
5=extremely confident

1.  When I am tired                                     1    2   3   4  5
2.  When I am in a bad mood                  1   2    3  4  5
3.  When I feel I don’t have the time    1  2    3   4  5
4. When I am on vacation                        1  2   3    4  5
5.  When it is raining or snowing           1  2   3    4  5

SCORE YOURSELF
Compute the average of all five items above
If any of the items are unanswered, be sure to fill out before scoring.
A higher score on this measure indicates greater self-efficacy.

Strategies for Increasing Self-efficacy for Physical Activity

Past performance                      * set goals and activity based on your fitness level
* Rehearse activity behavior (maybe a guided walk or walk to do an errand)
*Self-monitoring with pedometers and/or activity log or gps watch

Vicarious experience               * use exercise dvds, you tube videos, on demand fitness programs or peer role models who are exercising
* have peer role models be your workout buddy once or twice a week
* hire a trainer and do group sessions with other people trying to achieve similiar goals

Verbal persuasion                      *emphasize physiological benefits of physical activity
*praise yourself for any progress
*attribute all successes to your efforts and attentiveness to doing some activity daily
*encourage family and friends to support you and reinforce the activity behavior

Physiological cues

*anticipate and positively interpret physical discomforts related to physical activity (example, fatigue and muscle aches, & if you don’t like to run because you feel everything wiggle and jiggle then running probably is not for you until you lose some weight, try again later.

Try using a physical activity log.  There are lots of apps out there right now that are easy to use.  You can always just try using a single sheet of paper and marking the days of the month.  Put in each day the activity and total minutes.  It’s a great visual to see how much you are REALLY doing to make exercise a habit on your JOURNEY to better health.

You CAN achieve your Goals – just put your mind to it!

Why What You Think About Your Food Matters…

There’s no doubt about it… Your body and your mind are directly linked. What you think about has a clear effect on your health and vice versa. In fact, I’ve just come across a fascinating study that shows how strong this mind-body connection is.

Researchers at Yale University decided to see how your thoughts affect your body’s response to food. The study, published in the online journal Health Psychology, focused on ghrelin levels in the body. So we’re on the same page, ghrelin is also known as the “hunger” hormone. It sends a signal to your brain that makes you want to eat.

If your body’s ghrelin levels are high, you’ll tend to overeat… even if you are already feeling full. Likewise, low ghrelin levels are associated with feelings of satiety and not needing to eat more. .

One more thing – ghrelin levels typically increase before meals and decrease after eating.

Back to the study…

The researchers recruited volunteers and divided them into two groups:

Group 1 – received a milkshake that they were told was a 620-calorie “indulgent” shake.

Group 2 – received a milkshake that they were told was a 140-calorie “sensible” shake.

In reality, both groups got the same exact shake, which came in at 380 calories.

So what happened?

After drinking the shake, both groups had their ghrelin levels measured.

The group that thought they were having the nice, fatty-shake had a dramatic and steep decline in their ghrelin levels.

The group that thought they were being healthy had a neutral ghrelin response.

Downtown Memphis personal trainer and Energy Fitness owner, Tonya Tittle, keeping you informed on how to maximize your workouts and minimize your recovery time:

Did you know that taking a ginger supplement reduces soreness from

the negative motion of weight training?

For example, when you’re doing a push up, the down motion (also called the eccentric phase) is where most of your soreness originates from.

Recent studies suggest that taking a daily supplementation of ginger reduces this soreness, which will allow you recover more quickly and ultimately work out harder!
