The Interstitium: A New Organ Discovery & What It Means for Your Fascia

Recent advancements in medical research have unveiled the interstitium as a newly discovered organ, highlighting its crucial role in fascia and connective tissue health.
The interstitium is a body-wide network of interconnected, fluid-filled spaces supported by a lattice of strong, flexible proteins. It exists throughout the body, just beneath the skin and surrounding organs, arteries, capillaries, and veins. Incredibly, it moves four times more fluid than the vascular system, making it essential for overall movement, function, and hydration.
This discovery redefines our understanding of human anatomy and physiology, particularly in relation to fascia—the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, nerves, and organs. Instead of seeing fascia as a rigid structure that needs to be “broken up,” modern research focuses on improving its “slide and glide” capabilities. Since it would take over 2,000 lbs of pressure to physically break up fascia, the goal is instead to enhance its fluid movement and elasticity through proper hydration, movement, massage, and self-care techniques.
As an Exercise Physiologist, Nutrition Coach, and Massage Therapist, my goal is to educate and inspire you to take better care of your fascia and overall body. To keep your fascia and interstitium healthy, prioritize:
✔️ Hydration – Drink plenty of water to support fluid movement.
✔️ Consistent Movement – Move well and move often to maintain elasticity.
✔️ Massage Therapy – Hands-on bodywork improves circulation and tissue health.
✔️ Foam Rolling & Trigger Point Therapy – Targeting problem areas a few times per week can enhance function and reduce pain.
When addressing trigger points within the fascia, studies suggest applying pressure at a 7 out of 10 on the discomfort scale for optimal therapeutic benefits. This ensures effective release without causing tissue damage while promoting better mobility and pain relief.
