Cuss Words = More Gains? This Study Says YES

Yes—there is actually real scientific research that suggests swearing during workouts can boost performance and even increase pain tolerance. So yes, dropping a few choice words mid-squat might be doing more than just scaring the gym bros. Thanks to Ginger for tagging me on something on social for a topic idea for this week. Great one!

🔬 What the Research Says:

1. Keele University (UK) – 2017 Study

  • Researchers: Dr. Richard Stephens and colleagues

  • Study: Participants pedaled a stationary bike and performed handgrip exercises while either swearing or using neutral words.

  • Results:

    • Swearing increased peak power by up to 24% on the bike test.

    • Participants also had higher grip strength.

    • Pain threshold was higher when swearing.

2. Why It Works

Cursing represents a powerful and ubiquitous component of natural language. In American English, cursing serves beneficial functions such as pain alleviation, increased grip strength, and social bonding among peers (Bergen, 2016; Stephens, Atkins, & Kingston, 2009; Stephens, Spierer, & Katehis, 2018). These benefits are counterbalanced by a variety of negative social and/or legal consequences.

  • Swearing activates the sympathetic nervous system (your fight-or-flight mode).

  • This triggers a surge in adrenaline, making you more hyped, focused, and less sensitive to discomfort.

  • It can distract from fatigue, reduce perceived effort, and create a stronger sense of control or defiance—especially during tough reps.


🧠 Bonus Fact:

Swearing works best when it’s genuine and not overused. If you’re constantly cussing, your brain starts to tune it out and the pain-dulling, power-boosting effects fade.


🏋️‍♀️ How to Use It (Strategically):

  • Save the f-bomb for your final set or toughest rep.

  • Make it your mental trigger word for “beast mode.”

  • Just maybe skip it if you’re in a kids’ gym or around fragile ears 😅


Yes—swearing can make your workout stronger. Just don’t overdo it… or blame your PRs on profanity alone. It’s science, not magic. 💥
