Why It’s Not Comfortable To Eat Post Workout..Do It Anyway!
At Energy Fitness, our mission is to inspire optimal health and wellness through empowerment, education, coaching, and training. A crucial part of that mission is teaching clients how to support their workouts with smart nutrition. While many people focus on the workout itself, recovery begins the moment you finish, and what you consume afterward plays a significant role in how you feel and perform long-term.
Your body needs to recover after intense activity, and refueling within 15 to 30 minutes post-workout is essential. However, many of our clients struggle with this because of the “faux full” feeling they experience after exercise. This sensation occurs because your blood has shunted away from your core to your muscles to power your workout. Even though you might not feel like eating, post-workout nutrition helps reduce muscle fatigue, soreness, and even muscle wasting.
That’s where protein or liquid recovery drinks come in handy. Liquids are more bio-available to your body, meaning they absorb faster than solid food because they bypass much of the digestive process. This fast-acting nutrition helps your muscles recover quicker and more efficiently. To make it even more effective, keep the fat content low—no more than 10 grams—so the body can focus on muscle repair without slowing digestion. Our choice protein shake is our Energy Fitness custom label blend of Pea Protein with Stevia as sweetener in which we have onsite in our small Pro-shop and is included with clients first personal training package. An additional one that we like or recommend is Orgain in those little convenient single serving containers which are available at Costco and some grocery stores.
At Energy Fitness, we also coach our clients on the benefits of intermittent fasting, which involves fasting for 12 to 14 hours. This period of fasting allows your body to reset, boost metabolism, and improve overall health. But, during your fast or post-workout recovery, you need to prioritize hydration, especially replenishing electrolytes.
Electrolytes, like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, are critical for muscle contraction and hydration. Without sufficient electrolytes, you may experience cramps, fatigue, or impaired performance. It’s important to make sure you’re getting enough electrolytes, whether through electrolyte drinks, supplements, or a well-balanced diet.
To sum up: your workout isn’t over until you’ve nutritionally supported it. By refueling quickly with the right combination of protein, low fat, and electrolytes, you’ll maximize your recovery and help your body perform better for the next challenge ahead. Let us coach you toward a healthier lifestyle with smart nutrition, supporting your goals every step of the way.
