Ditch The Dairy & Try Cashew Yogurt
As many of you may already know I am anti-dairy all the way and even attempt to nutrition coach clients this way as well. I mean c’mon we aren’t so deficient in the nutrients in dairy that you see humans running into the fields or barns to go suckle a dairy cow! Yes, that’s kind of a gross analogy but it fits. We don’t have the stomach’s to properly digest animal milk and don’t get me started or make me want to vomit in my own mouth on this new trend of consuming colostrum (the first secretion from the mammary glands after giving birth, rich in antibodies).
Let’s talk yogurt which is a fermented food, so great for you and rich in probiotics. You have other choices rather than the fully overstocked shelves of dairy yogurt. I have been dairy free since 1995 and before that I didn’t eat that much of it anyway as it always made me have sharp stomach pains. Of course my 23&me genetics report shows I’m lactose intolerant which makes total sense. I digress, there are several non-dairy choices to help you get those probiotics much needed for healthy gut bacteria and gut health.
Soy, Coconut & Cashew Yogurt are great options unless you have an allergy to one of those. Cashew yogurt does contain some coconut as well. Having healthy gut bacteria can help you in so many ways such as improve immune system, decrease or eliminate candida, clear skin, improved digestion and oral health. Probiotics can be useful for acne, rosacea and eczema as well as other skin disorders.
Where do you find these dairy yogurt alternatives? Depends on what grocery stores are near you or how progressively healthy they tend to be towards their customers!
Trader Joe’s has it’s own brand. Whole foods and Sprouts has the Forager brand. Traditional grocery stores may have the soy and coconut yogurts.
Don’t want to eat yogurt but still want the benefits of probiotics then try other fermented foods like saeurkraut or kombucha (more info on this later as I’ve learned to brew my own and I hated store bought). Of course you can take capsules as well and I have my favorite brands I recommend to clients.
Here are ways I enjoy my unsweetened Cashew Yogurt:
- sometimes in a protein shake if I have really had an exhausting workout and delayed breakfast past my usual time and want to catch up on protein and calories (instead of back loading at end of day)
- with coconut chunks
- when I decide to be bad…with dairy free chocolate chips
- with Tiger Nut flakes
- with Amaranth flakes (cereal)
- with puffed millet (cereal)
- plain
- with thin rice cakes
- with gluten free graham crackers
- as an ingredient in baking gluten free and dairy free foods
