Tough Love and Support for Your Wellness Journey: No Excuses, Just Results
So many times when I’m out and about in public places like grocery stores, medical offices and other public venues such as jury duty I was called and dismissed for last week I look around and am reminded of how much people just don’t take their health seriously. One couple I saw had to be in their eighties and their posture and gait were just so hunkered over and they had a walk/waddle way of getting into the car. That’s what’s on the road so how fast do you think your reflexes would be driving an automobile?
This past year as baby boomers have aged, clients or prospective clients have come to Energy Fitness with the goal of reversing some of the aging process, regain lack of mobility, regain loss of balance and reduce body fat. These are numerous categories that are no small feat for lifestyle changing and becoming a habit. Do you revert back to your unhealthy ways and what seems easier when you don’t reach your health and fitness goals as fast as you would like? You know it takes more than 2 weeks for major lifestyle changes as it’s more like a year.
Tough Love and Support for Your Wellness Journey: No Excuses, Just Results
At Energy Fitness, our mission is to inspire optimal health and wellness through personal training and nutrition coaching using our proven energize method. Especially for baby boomers and those recovering from injuries, it’s time to face the hard truth: if you want to be healthy, you have to put in the work. Strength training, flexibility exercises, and a clean diet are non-negotiable. Here’s how you can start, no excuses allowed. But remember, while we push you to be your best, we’re here to support and nurture you every step of the way.
Strength Training: No Pain, No Gain
Strength training isn’t optional; it’s essential. It’s time to ditch the excuses and start lifting. Here’s the tough truth:
- Start Slow, but Start Now: Use light weights if you have to or at least select a weight that is an effort level of 7 or 8 on a scale of 10., but get moving. Gradually increase resistance and don’t shy away from pushing your limits.
- Focus on Form: Bad form leads to injuries. If you don’t know how to do it right, hire a personal trainer. No excuses! Our clients are shocked at how many different/new to them exercises we incorporate into their program and begin to see why you often can’t get results on your own doing the same things you have always done but don’t know any difference.
- Commit: Strength training 2-3 times a week is the minimum. Anything less, and you’re cheating yourself. We cram a lot of exercises into our semi-private 30 minute personal training sessions and clients are always working hard right to the bell!
And remember, you’re stronger than you think. Every small step forward is a victory. We believe in you!
Flexibility: No More Stiff Excuses
Flexibility is crucial for mobility and reducing pain. Stop complaining about stiffness and start stretching:
- Daily Stretching: Spend 10-15 minutes daily stretching. It’s not too much to ask. Try a bedtime rally stretch session by getting on the floor right before bed. I like to do after a bath or shower when my muscles are warmer and fascia more in a gel-like state to allow for more flexibility. Don’t forget to stretch post workout also. We discourage doing static (holding) stretches before your workouts, save those for post workout. Do more movement based stretches after a 5-15 minute cardio session if you go straight into weight training.
- Yoga or Pilates: These aren’t just for the young. They’re crucial for maintaining flexibility and balance. Make it a priority. We have several clients that love their pilates. I don’t do myself since the type of training and cross training I do suffices for my goals.
- Be Consistent: Aim for flexibility exercises 5-6 times a week. Sporadic efforts won’t cut it.
You’ll feel the difference in no time. Imagine the freedom of movement and the reduction in pain. You deserve this! Stretching is often the hardest to get some people to do but the fastest results in a shorter time than strength training and can help you be more mobile for your sessions. We like to incorporate mobility/stretching style exercises into client programs as our bodies are fluid and so should our movement patterns.
Nutrition: Cut the Junk, Eat Clean
Your diet is the foundation of your health. No more excuses about cravings or convenience. Here’s the reality:
- Whole Foods Only: Fresh, unprocessed foods are your new best friends. Load up on fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
- Boost Protein Intake: Your muscles need protein to grow and repair. Include a source of protein in every meal. Are you eating at least 70-90 grams per day? More if you are a much larger individual.
- Ditch Processed Foods: Processed foods are garbage for your body. Eliminate them. Now. If you have in the house you will eat them when stressed, tired or bored.
- Meal Prep: Plan and prepare your meals weekly. No excuses about being too busy. Your health is your priority. I don’t do this but recommend for others that don’t have the habit of packing a healthy lunch and taking to work daily or packing a lunch in a glass container if you are retired and sticking to that meal.
Eating well will make you feel amazing. Your energy levels will soar, and you’ll see the benefits quickly. Keep at it, and enjoy the journey to a healthier you!
Make It Happen: No More Excuses
Creating a new routine is tough. But tough love means no more excuses. Here’s how you stay on track:
- Hire a Personal Trainer: If you’re struggling, get professional help. A trainer will keep you accountable and ensure you’re doing things right.
- Schedule Workouts: Your workouts are as important as any meeting. Put them on your calendar and don’t skip them.
- Stay Disciplined: Push through the days when you don’t feel like it. Your future self will thank you.
We’re here to guide you and cheer you on. Every step forward is a step towards a healthier, happier you. Don’t give up!
