Benefits of Mirrors While Working Out
There are lots of people that avoid the mirrors while lifting weights or working out. Those mirrors are there for lots of reasons. One, make the room look bigger and more visually pleasing. For trainers working with more than one client in a session the mirrors are great for seeing that good form is happening or correcting bad form. No hiding in a corner as the trainer or fitness instructor can observe you without having to look at you directly and this can be a good thing.
In the video below I discuss and show you are few reasons or ways you can check your form during exercises. If you don’t have mirrors then video yourself doing a few exercises like coaches do their teams and are able to point out weaknesses or flaws in movements. Mirrors are also great for increasing balance on certain exercises. The visual (vestibular system) connection can make an exercise easier. Example, try standing on one leg with your other leg bent at a 90 degree angle, now look at one spot then look all around. Now, close your eyes and try the same thing. Not as easy right? That’s what mirrors can do your for.
You can look at range of motion. Is one side better than the other? Does one hip not rotate as well? Do you jut your neck forward on some exercises or cheat just to complete the full range of motion?
Don’t think of mirrors as just a reminder of how you didn’t need that much to eat last night for dinner or as one client use to say “I was over served!” It can be a positive check in to remind you that your body is a temple and you need to take care of it. If you have been working hard on your health and wellness then if can be an instant reward. Let’s age gracefully as aging WILL happen like death and taxes. You only have one body, so why not throw some positive energy at it and when you look in mirrors. Sow yourself some love. If you really want to do something about the way you look then get on a plan and keep track of and even take pictures for accountability or hire a trainer or nutrition coach like me.
